Software House first to achieve UL listing on Power over Ethernet (PoE) for Access Control
Westford, MA — February 11, 2010 — Software House, a Tyco International company, today announced its iSTAR Edge two-reader IP device is the first door controller in the industry to formally attain UL listing for UL 294B, a new standard for the use of Power over Ethernet (PoE) in access control systems. iSTAR Edge has also attained UL 294 (Access Control System Units) and UL 1076 (Proprietary Burglar Alarm Units and Systems), making the complete iSTAR Edge solution UL certified.

UL is the gold standard across the globe for product safety certification and compliance solutions. UL has developed more than 1,000 Standards for Safety, which are vital to ensuring public safety and improving quality of products and services. The UL 294B standard applies to the construction, performance, and operation of access control systems and equipment that employ PoE as the primary power source.
Software House iSTAR Edge offers customers a unique optional PoE plug-in module featuring the latest PoE Plus standard, IEEE 802.3at, which meets the criteria of UL 294 B. The module provides ample power for two doors and associated readers, locks, and exit devices over a standard CAT 5/6 network cable. By leveraging a company’s existing LAN infrastructure, there is no need for local power at the door. It is the only PoE module in the industry that can be easily removed and replaced should PoE standards change.
iSTAR Edge joins the growing list of Software House solutions which have been given UL 294 and 1076 validation.
